From the world of colours, an admirable example of an Italian industrial chain

Fila is a long-standing Italian company established in 1920. In the 1990s, faced with the need to expand internationally in order to remain competitive in a globalising market, it identified solid players with a good reputation and high productive capacity and embarked on a campaign of acquisitions.

In order to maintain its success, Fila also made radical choices, the first of which was implemented ten years ago, when sales of writing materials were threatened by the growing popularity of laptops, smart phones and tablets. The company made high-quality crayons and pencil leads its core business, which now accounts for 80% of the company’s investments. Fila decided to switch its focus from the less reliable clientele that prioritised price over quality to a specific target: children aged between two and 10.

Control of the entire production chain also helped mark the company out as a leader. Every step of its production processes is closely controlled, from the cutting of the wood to the final coat of paint on the crayons. This care is necessary to ensure that the products are 100% safe, since they are used by children, who are likely to put them in their mouths.

Fila also made important investments in research and development, with more than 20 R&D managers working on product improvement through study and the new materials.

All this has allowed the company to achieve an important role in its target market, showing that Fila understands how vital it is in today’s world to make knowledgeable decisions aimed at guaranteeing product quality and safety by means of a modern, efficient, controlled chain.
